DISPLAYS FOR HATS...AND MORE HATS
Borrow a hat rack or hall tree to display a variety of hats; top hats, western hats, berets, hard hats, and so on.  Ask people in your community to contribute unusual styles and shapes.  Write stories or poems about the hats.

HATS 'ROUND THE WORLD
Find pictures in magazines of hats associated with other lands, such as a turban, a tam, a coolie hat, a sombrero, and a British Palace guard.  Display    on bulletin board.

YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY
Have children bring a hat or bonnet they wore when they were babies.         Pin the bonnets on the bulletin board with each child's name or picture next   to each hat.  Give each child the opportunity to tell something about her or   his hat, such as "I wore this hat when I was a year old" or "my uncle brought   me back this hat from Texas"

HATS ON THE JOB
Find pictures of people wearing work hats in magazines and catalogs.  Select pictures that clearly distinguish different occupations.  Good examples might be fire fighter, police officer, baker, nurse, football player, construction worker, astronaut, and college graduate.  You might wish to find pictures (or take them) of people in your community.

HATS CRAFTS DISPLAY
Give the opportunity to display hats that children make.

BOBBIE PINS AND BOWS
Collect hair accessories and implements used in creating hairstyles for another display.  Hair pins, bobbie pins, hairnets, barrettes, bows, hair combs, rollers, headbands, haircutting scissors, and permanent wave accessories are just a few possibilities.

CREATE YOUR OWN HAT PARTICIPATORY DISPLAY
Put a simple plain hat on a wig and supply objects for children to decorate the hat; artificial flowers, feathers, junk jewelry, ribbons, and braid trims are good possibilities.  Fasten decorations with glue and velcro.  You might think of this creation as a kind of flannel board that gets decorated again and again.  The velcro approach will give the children a chance to attach and reattach the decorations.
